Maria Iorio and Raphaël Cuomo are the winners of the tenth edition of the Premio Furla titled The Nude Prize. The announcement took place during the press conference to present the tenth edition of the prize, which was held this morning in Melvyn Palazzo Reale.
The international jury, composite Vanessa Beecroft as Chairman, Teresa Gleadowe (President, Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham), Barbara Hernandez (Director, SOMA – Mexico City), Alya Sebti (Artistic Director, Fifth Biennial Marrakech) and Benno Tempel (Director, Foundation Gemeentemuseum, The Hague) the motivation for his choice:
“The jury thought long about the opportunities offered by the Furla Prize: residence at SOMA in Mexico and the retrospective exhibition at the Palazzo Reale in Milan in March 2015, as well as the complete production of a new opera plan. We tried to figure out which artist had the potential to benefit from these opportunities and who among the five finalists could respond better to different contexts fielded by Nobel. The work chosen creates a bridge between the history and the most significant instances of this in Europe and around the world. Explores issues such as migration (immigration / emigration), archival practices in museums, the memory and the cultural construction of these themes, counterbalancing the way they are normally treated in the society of the media and by introducing new perspectives. The jury is pleased to deliver the Premio Furla Maria Iorio and Raphaël Cuomo.”
