The auction of The Andy Williams Collection Of Navajo Blankets neared the high estimate to total $978,506 with all of the lots finding buyers. It becomes the first ‘White Glove’ auction at Sotheby’s New York this year.
David Roche, Senior Consultant in Sotheby’s American Indian Art Department commented: “I am thrilled with the result of today’s sale of The Andy Williams Collection Of Navajo Blankets –the first White Glove auction at Sotheby’s New York this year. Andy’s spotlight spilled out across the sale, illuminating the category to a whole new body of collectors.
This was a rare auction event, with 100% of the lots finding buyers to bring a total of $979,254, nearing the pre-sale high estimate. The sale was led by a Navajo First Phase Chief’s Wearing Blanket –the rarest type of Navajo Blanket and a great icon of American Indian Art – which sold for $221,000. The collection included the entire body of Navajo weaving and attracted a global audience to one of the finest and most sought-after areas of all American Art.”
